Microsoft Denies Last Week’s Xbox One Leaks, Publishers Confirm Them
Last week, we told you about some alleged leaks from inside Microsoft talking about their plans for the Halo franchise on the Xbox One and plans for the console itself. While The Verge confirmed some of the details, Microsoft was understandably upset and denied the veracity of the leaks. It turns out that some of their publishing partners aren’t on the same page and have done some quiet confirming of their own.
While publishers haven’t been talking to the press about an HD version of Halo 2 or the status of Halo 5, one publisher has brought VG24/7 into the loop about the Xbox One console.
A “senior publishing source” told VG24/7 that Microsoft would launch a new model of the Xbox One in 2014. While it may not necessarily be a version of the console without an optical disc drive or a 1 TB hard drive, the source did say that it would be priced lower than the current $499. The launch model of the Xbox One would be discounted down to the lower price.
Microsoft’s Aaron Greenberg denied the price drop rumour on Twitter after the NeoGAF leak. It looks like he may not be on the same page as his publishers and it’s not a good look when he, as a Microsoft representative, keeps denying something that everyone else is confirming.
Meanwhile, Microsoft’s legal department is trying to track down the NeoGAF user who was leaking all the info about the Xbox One. A Kotaku source inside Microsoft says that executives are sending the legal department after NeoGAF’s ntkrnl. That doesn’t really confirm the leaks but you’d wonder why Microsoft would go after someone when these leaks have undone a tonne of PR damage that Microsoft has done to itself.
