The UK’s Porn Filter Blocks League of Legends Patch
I think we all knew that the United Kingdom’s so-called porn filter would end up causing more harm than good but I don’t think that gamers thought it would hit so close to home. League of Legends gamers have been experiencing errors after a recent update that included files with names that triggered the filters.
There are two files in the latest LoL patch that get caught by the porn filter and aren’t allowed to be pushed down to the users. These files are named “XerathMageChainsExtended.luaobj” and “VarusExpirationTimer.luaobj.” Emphasis has been added to those file names to show what triggered the filters. As a result, gamers are experiencing file not found errors because they don’t have two of the necessary game files.
These so-called porn filters are mandated by the British government to be implemented at the ISP level. Newer customers have the filters automatically activated when they sign up for service. Established customers are required to be asked to opt-in by their current ISP.
This isn’t the first time that the British “won’t somebody please think of the children” porn filter has been a bit over-exuberant in filtering out content. Late last year, it was reported that the porn filters were preventing people from accessing websites including child protection charities, women’s charities, gay rights groups and the websites of the British and Scottish national libraries.
