Reddit’s Dogecoin Subreddit Donates $30,000 to Jamaican Olympic Bobsled Team

dogecoin-headerWhile it’s being described as a sort of sequel to Cool Runnings, the Jamaican bobsled team is really going to Russia for the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi. However, they aren’t getting adequate funding to run the team and members have been relying on donations and their own money.

Leave it up to the folks of Reddit to step in for some people in need. The good folks of /r/dogecoin have raised $30,000 to help send the Jamaicans to Sochi.

The redditors of /r/dogecoin through the Dogecoin Foundation recently launched a campaign to help fund Jamaica’s Olympic bobsledding dream. Together, the community raised 35 Bitcoins and almost 1.3 million Dogecoins as of writing. That sums up to be over $30,000 that is being donated to the bobsled team.

The Jamaican bobsledders haven’t been to an Olympic games in 12 years when the two-man team finished 28th in the 2002 games in Salt Lake City. The team famously debuted at the 1988 Winter Olympics which was chronicled in the film Cool Runnings.

In addition to the Dogecoin community’s fundraising efforts, the Jamaican Bobsleigh Team has two official crowdfunding campaigns to help out. They have campaigns on IndieGoGo and CrowdTilt. For more on the Dogecoin campaign, click here.
