SimCity for Macs Doesn’t Work Either

simcity-headerWe’ll it’s only been about five-and-a-half months since the launch of SimCity for Windows but it doesn’t look like the teams at EA or Maxis have learned their lessons.

There are widespread reports online that SimCity for Mac is plagued with a number of issues that has rendered it unplayable for a large number of users despite being delayed from a March launch alongside the Windows version to August 29th.

Issues appear to range from Origin problems to issues with the game itself.

A number of users have reported having to restart their computer or reinstall Origin each time they want to play the game. One user told TUAW that they had to reinstall three times just to download SimCity. Whether that’s a problem solely with SimCity or a general Origin for Mac problem, I don’t know.

Once the game gets going, there are numerous more issues. Many users are reporting that the full-screen mode doesn’t seem to work. Instead, the game plays in a small window whether you want to or not. Users with Retina displays are limited to 1920 x 1440 or 1440 x 900 rather than the 2560 x 1440 that Retina monitors are capable. Other users are reporting lag despite using newer computers who meet the specs listed by Maxis.

And if you have OS 10.9 Maverick, you’re in worse shape. On the SimCity forums, a Maxis rep said that SimCity doesn’t officially support that version of OS X yet. Apparently, users OS 10.7.4 and earlier are supposed to be able to play but seem to be having installation issues.

Maxis says that these issues affect a small number of people and that they are working with affected users directly to solve their problems. I wonder if that’s what they thought about all the issues at the game’s Windows launch in March.

I guess we’ll see how EA and Origin handles what is likely to be the first real test of their new refund policy.
