Sony is Working on a Gran Turismo Movie

gran-turismo-headerJust when you thought that Hollywood had run out of ideas, they go out of their way to prove it yet again. On the heels of the rejuvenation of the Fast and the Furious franchise and the announcement of Need for Speed and Hot Wheels movies, Sony is getting into the game with their own car racing franchise.

Rumours say that Sony is working on a movie based on its Gran Turismo game franchise with the producers of Fifty Shades of Grey at the helm.

Details on the film are limited at the moment. No directors, writers or actors have been attached. Nothing resembling a plot has been mentioned yet but that’s not surprising as Gran Turismo is a racing sim on closed circuits rather than being a street racing game like Need for Speed.

Producers Mike De Luca and Dana Brunetti have a bit of a hit and miss history in Hollywood. De Luca was a producer on The Social Network and House of Cards but also has a bunch of mediocre titles to his credit. Brunetti’s IMDB page is less promising. While he has producer credits for The Social Network, Moneyball and John Q, he also was a producer on Ghost Rider, Drive Angry, S1m0ne and Lost in Space. Worse, Brunetti wrote the story of Stallone’s 1995 Judge Dredd which we will never speak of again.

Without much details, there isn’t much to say. I am willing to say that there’s almost no way that this movie doesn’t turn out completely ridiculously. I hope the producers watch Rush before setting down on a Fast and the Furious path. I get the worry that it’ll end up a cross between Fast and the Furious, Days of Thunder and Driven.
