Cloud’s Buster Sword is Real and Ridiculous

As cool as Sephiroth and his sword was in Final Fantasy VII, Cloud’s famous Buster Sword was on another level of sheer over-the-top insanity. Sure, Sephiroth’s sword was long but it was closer to an up-scaled letter opener than a sword. The Buster Sword, on the other hand, looks like it could slice someone clean in two.

So it shouldn’t come as much of a surprise that when the folks on YouTube’s AweMeChannel, it was the biggest sword they ever build.

The Secret of Peter Molyneux’s Curiosity Revealed

The long-awaited secret behind Peter Molyneux and 22Cans’ iOS cube-clicker Curiosity has finally been revealed. The prize at the end of the Curiosity could be considered a bit underwhelming and massively unexpected at the same time.

The winner of Curiosity was Bryan Henderson of Edinburgh, Scotland. He was the person who destroyed the final cubes surrounding Curiosity’s secret. For his troubles of cube clicking, Henderson won two very interesting prizes.

Kinect 2.0 Will Be Very Creepy

xbox-one-kinectA recent report by Polygon suggests that the Xbox One could find new ways to annoy the hardcore gamer. While they’re humming and hawing over used games, Polygon’s sources are talking about the XBOne’s iteration of Kinect being a little bit like Apple’s Siri program. However, it seems to be that it’s a bit closer to HAL 9000 than Siri.

Will & Jaden Smith, DJ Jazzy Jeff and Alfonso Ribeiro Take Over The Graham Norton Show

I don’t know if this falls under what we typically do as geek culture coverage but it’s my blog and I love this video so I say we’re watching this. Will and Jaden Smith were on the BBC’s Graham Norton Show to promote a movie when they dropped a couple of massive surprises. You can watch the whole thing but the fun really starts to pick up at about 1:45.

Geek Links of the Week

Alright, I’ve covered the features and marketing behind the Xbox One but how about a proper tech showdown? Who wins on paper: The PlayStation 4 or Xbox One? [Digital Foundry]

Both consoles use an AMD Jaguar processor. This isn’t just for game consoles but could be a big deal in the laptop market in the very near future. [The Verge]

Speaking of power, NVIDIA has launched the GTX 780 which slots in between the 680 & Titan in terms of price and performance. Is it worth it if you’re willing to pay a premium but not Titan premium? [Anand Tech]

What is Google’s plan with Google Fiber? Unfortunately, they aren’t thinking about a massive roll-out. All I really want is them to come to my hometown so I don’t have to deal with my cable provider’s BS. [BGR]

Doctor Who’s Fakest Websites

Without a new episode of Doctor Who this weekend, I’m a little lost. I don’t know about you but it takes me a bit to adjust when a show that was appointment viewing for me ends its run. To help tide you (and I) over for a bit, here’s a video of the fakest websites and apps featured on Doctor Who. Maybe we should write it off a wibbly-wobbly timey-wimey.

Console Wars: The Xbox One’s Failure to Launch is a Marketing Problem

playstation-4-vs-xbox-one-controllersHaving had a few days to digest the two very different launch events for Sony’s PlayStation 4 and Microsoft’s Xbox One, I’ve come to a realization. As much as people don’t seem to like the Xbox launch, it wasn’t a failure in and of itself. In fact, I believe that Microsoft successfully accomplished what it set out to do.

The Xbox One and PlayStation Four both play video games. However, if you were to watch the two launch events, I’d understand if you were a little confused by that statement. While the PlayStation 4’s launch emphasised how it plays games and how it augments that with the social networking and sharing features, the Xbox spent comparatively little time talking about the games.

The difference in the launches was an example of how the console manufacturers are positioning their next-gen consoles in the market.

Relive the Downfall of Rapture in a BioShock Fan Film

So the planned BioShock film helmed by director Gore Verbinski didn’t work out but that doesn’t mean that we’ll never have a live-action return to Rapture.

A group of Vancouver film students did their own short fan film looking at the rise of plasmids and the downfall of Rapture from the prospectives of two brothers who travelled to the underwater city to be artists. I call it a fan film but the sets, props and special effects are absolutely fantastic. You mean to tell me that students can manage this but Hollywood can’t do it without breaking the bank?
