NVIDIA’s Shield Arrives in June

nvidia-shieldIt’s a good month for the Shields of the world. Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. was picked up by ABC for next season. Now, NVIDIA has announced that their Shield handheld would hit store shelves by the end of June for $350.

At that price, the Shield is immediately pushed straight to luxury item levels, even for a gaming console, but you are also getting what is likely the best handheld console on the market (or at least the most powerful) thanks to the HD screen and ability to stream games from computers with compatible GTX graphics cards.

The official specs list from NVIDIA includes:

  • A 5-inch 1280×720 multi-touch display
  • Android 4.2.1 Jelly Bean OS
  • NVIDIA Tegra 4 mobile processor with 2 GB of RAM
  • 16 GB internal flash memory with extra memory through a MicroSD slot
  • 802.11n Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 3.0 connectivity
  • Weight of 579 grams (1.28 pounds)

Pre-orders start next Monday, May 20th, at selected retailers including GameStop, NewEgg, Micro Center and Computers Canada. People who are on NVIDIA’s Project Shield mailing list can already pre-order the system but chances are that they already knew that.

In addition to the Shield unit, orders also come with free copies of Sonic the Hedgehog 4: Episode 2 and Expendable: Rearmed.
