Comic Book Pull List for December 3, 2014

captain-america-peggy-carter-agent-of-shield-1Who’s the black private dick that’s a sex machine with all the chicks? Shaft! It’s not everyday that I get to start a post with a killer line like that. But if you can dig it, Dynamite Entertainment is launching a new Shaft comic book this week starting with Shaft #1.

Meanwhile, over at Marvel, they have a comic prequel one-shot for the Agent Carter TV show with Captain America: Peggy Carter, Agent of SHIELD #1. And to give equal time to the other folks of the Big Two, DC Comics is bringing back the Secret Six once again. Fourth time’s the charm, right? We’ll see if the New 52 holds better luck in Sinister Six #1.

Comic Book Pull List for November 26, 2014

steampunk-battlestar-galactica-1880-4You know, I haven’t been to my local comic book shop in about six weeks, I probably have a rather painful bill waiting for me when I pick up my file this week. I really should set a reminder on my phone to pick up my file every third or fourth week of the month. I know that you probably aren’t too worried about my comic buying habits but every little bit I can help you guys, I will.

Anyway, I have a few interesting selections from this week’s pull list but I’ve kept away from the big two. Let’s start with a couple of very odd takes on franchises. IDW has a mashup of Angry Birds and Transformers that might just be out of Michael Bay’s dreams in Angry Birds Transformers #1. If steampunk and sci-fi are your thing, you’ll probably want to pick up the finale of Dynamite’s miniseries with Steampunk Battlestar Galactica 1880 #4. And for fans of the new Planet of the Apes movies, Boom bridges the two reboot films starting with Dawn of the Planet of the Apes #1.

Comic Book Pull List for November 19, 2014

batman-66-meets-the-green-hornet-6This week’s pull list is unexpectedly thin outside of the Big Two. Not that a relative shortage of new releases is a bad thing. It quite helps my wallet since there isn’t quite as much for me to be tempted to pick up at my local comic book shop.

DC Comics has a couple of Batman ’66 comics for us this week. The Batman and Green Hornet crossover comic (not to be confused with their TV crossover) comes to an end with Batman ’66 Meets The Green Hornet #6. If that’s not enough Batman ’66 for you, a lost episode of the TV series that was supposed to introduce Two-Face gets the comic treatment in Batman ’66: The Lost Episode #1. Meanwhile, over at Marvel, Spider-Woman #1 debuts this week. You might have heard about this comic already because of the controversial Milo Manara variant cover.

Comic Book Pull List for November 12, 2014

the-kitchen-1After noting a comparative lack of comics coming out the last couple of weeks, I swear that this week’s pull list just doesn’t end. An appearance at your local comic book store this week will certainly dent your wallet.

DC Comics has a new miniseries this week that certainly piqued my interest. In The Kitchen #1, the wives of some imprisoned Irish mobsters from Hell’s Kitchen, Manhattan, take over operations while their husbands rot in the slammer. Marvel isn’t going to be outdone with the launch of Sam Wilson as Captain America in All New Captain America #1. This month’s edition of Star Trek takes the crew of the rebooted USS Enterprise to DS9 in the middle of the Dominion War thanks to Q. And if you want something ridiculously cool and outlandish, Quentin Tarantino writes a mashup of Django Unchained and Zorro in Django Zorro #1. This is one mashup/crossover I never saw coming

Comic Book Pull List for November 5, 2014

superman-unchained-9-bannerUsually I start these posts with recommendations for new comic series but this week we start with a final issue. After nine issues, Superman Unchained comes to an end. Scott Snyder and Jim Lee are off to carry on with other projects (Batman, mostly) but their Superman collaboration ends with Superman Unchained #9.

Meanwhile, Marvel continues to try to cash in on the death of Wolverine by launching two more series this week. There’s Death of Wolverine: Life After Logan and Death of Wolverine: Weapon X Project. If that’s not your speed, maybe you can check out John Carter: Warlord of Mars. It’s from Dynamite rather than Marvel/Disney so there might be hope for those of you who weren’t high on Disney’s take on John Carter.

Comic Book Pull List for October 29, 2014

the-death-of-wolverine-deadpool-and-captain-america-1I seem to recall hearing about a Dredd movie sequel coming in comic form at some point from 2000 AD. I thought that they already did that but if you’re still wanting more Dredd (and who doesn’t want more Dredd), there’s Rebellion / 2000 AD’s Dredd: Uprise. Not only does Dredd find himself fighting crime but he’s also caught up in a bit of an economic culture war. That’s timely with elections just wrapping up in Ontario and upcoming in America.

Marvel continues with the death of Wolverine by bringing in a couple of his pals trying to keep people from studying Logan’s DNA in The Death of Wolverine: Deadpool and Captain America #1. And it’s annuals season over at DC Comics. They’ve got four annuals coming out this week with Harley Quinn, Swamp Thing, Justice League Dark and Justice League United all represented this week.

Comic Book Pull List for October 22, 2014

the-multiversity-the-just-1Is it just me or does this week seem pretty quiet in terms of new comic releases. Maybe everyone’s waiting until the week before Halloween and I just didn’t pay attention to that being a popular time for comic releases. Anyway, I have a couple of recommendations for the week. After a five decade absence (in the story), Edward Scissorhands is back and getting a comic book sequel (until the inevitable far too late cash-in revival [because I’m not a cynic or anything like that]) in Edward Scissorhands #1.

And I’ve never heard of the self-obsessed Earth-16 in the DC multiverse (there are 52 worlds in it so I can’t know it all) but it seems like something that would be oddly appropriate as a substitute for our Earth-0. Anyway, The Multiversity: The Just #1 sees the children of Earth-16 unprepared for the threat that faces them because they’re too interested in themselves to be at the ready for action. See, take out superheroes and it’s our actual Earth-0.

Comic Book Pull List for October 15, 2014

death-of-wolverine-4There are scads of licensed properties getting debuts this week on the comic book pull list. There are #1 issues for Sleepy Hollow and Doctor Who (featuring the Twelfth Doctor). There are also a pair of video game adaptations with Titan launching a The Evil Within series and IDW getting their hands on Skylanders.

If more traditional, superhero based comics are your thing, DC’s Trinity of Sin get their own series after last year’s Trinity War and Forever Evil crossover events in Trinity of Sin #1. More importantly, The Death of Wolverine miniseries ends in issue #4 which is out today. And Marvel is already trying to spin this story off to make more money with Death of Wolverine: The Logan Legacy #1.

Comic Book Pull List for October 8, 2014

injustice-gods-among-us-year-three-1I’ve left it until the last-minute so here’s a quick, thrown together comic book pull list for this week.

Injustice started as a comic book prequel to the video game but it seems as though the comic has more staying power than the game. It’s time for Injustice: Gods Among Us –  Year Three #1. With war engulfing the Earth and a great evil threatening mankind, can the Avengers and X-Men co-exist long enough to help? The answer lies in the nine-part miniseries Avengers and X-Men: Axis. And George R.R. Martin’s Meathouse Man short story gets its own one-shot comic book treatment from Jet City Comics.

Comic Book Pull List for October 1, 2014

thor-1Thor is the Asgardian God of thunder and utilizes his hammer, Mjolnir, to defeat his enemies. Well, that is until he is no long able to wield Mjolnir and hands it over to a worthy successor. And her much awaited debut comes this week in Thor #1. Marvel is keen to point out that the new Thor is Thor and not She-Thor, Lady Thor or “Thorita.” Not to sound like a cynic but I’d be much more excited if this becomes canon in the movies at some point too. That would take real balls from Disney/Marvel.

Elsewhere, Lobo is getting his own comic series and heads will roll. One’s already come off its former body on the cover of Lobo #1. And Sherlock Holmes and Harry Houdini join forces as someone is trying to destroy Houdini’s career. However, the title indicates there could be trouble afoot in Sherlock Holmes vs. Harry Houdini #1.
