Comic Book Pull List for July 3, 2013

what-if-avx-1If you go to your local comic book store tomorrow, expect to see a bunch of new series on the shelves. Smaller publishers like Avatar, Dynamite, Image and Zenscope each have one new series. Marvel has five new series coming out tomorrow. If you’re looking for something new, this is a good week to head to the shop rather than have your file accumulate.

Since there are so many new comics coming out this week, I thought that I’d make each of this week’s picks a new series. DC is building up to the Trinity War by digging into Pandora’s story in Trinity of Sin: Pandora #1. Marvel does a sort of speculative alternate reality miniseries starting with What If: AvX #1 whose title makes me think we might get some more alternate reality stories if this sells well. And this week’s best named new comic is Dark Skullkickers Dark #1 which clearly has twice the darkness of  your standard dark comics.

Comic Book Pull List for June 26, 2013

batman-superman-1Last week, I noted how DC followed up on the spectacularly successful release of Man of Steel (which I still haven’t gotten time to see yet) with absolutely no Superman comics. This week, they correct that with five different comics featuring Superman and that’s not including three trade paperbacks with Superman stories.

For the Superman fan, you can pick up two solo Superman titles with Adventures of Superman #2 and Superman #21 both out this week. Supes also teams up with his fellow Justice League friends in Justice League #21 and Injustice: Gods Among Us #6. And my first pick of the week is a new Superman series with Batman called Batman/Superman #1.

After all that, I still have two more picks that I have to give you. Since I was raised to be a huge kaiju fan, I’m looking forward to Godzilla: Rulers of the Earth #1. And you should give Image’s The Bounce #2 a read too.

Comic Book Pull List for June 19, 2013

100-bullets-brother-lono-1Man of Steel came out last weekend. Unlike Superman Returns, which we’re all going to pretend never happened, Man of Steel was loved by critics and movie goers. I’m working hard to make the time to see it but I’m a bit busy at the moment. The first free two hours I get through…

Disappointingly, DC didn’t follow-up the movie’s release with a new Superman comic after having three straight weeks of Superman/Justice League comics before Man of Steel came out. DC does have a new miniseries coming out from the award-winning 100 Bullets series with Brother Lono #1. If you’re more of a TV fan trying to ease into comics, Mulder and Scully are back to continue their story in X-Files Season Ten #1. On the Marvel front, their critically acclaimed Fantastic Four series continues this week with FF #9.

The Evolution of Superman’s Shield (Infographic)

It’s a common phrase from classic Superman stories. “It’s a bird! It’s a plane! No, it’s Superman! … I think it’s Superman. He looks a little different, don’t you think?”

Okay, that hasn’t actually been said but you could certainly understand why someone would say it. Over the 75 years since Superman made his first appearance in Action Comics #1, he’s changed his look a few times. In fact, the man of steel has sported over 20 different looks between comics, movies and TV.

For a timeline at those different looks, we have a handy infographic to show all of Supes different costumes.

Comic Book Pull List for June 12, 2013

superman-unchained-1It’s a good week to be a Superman fan, the new Superman reboot Man of Steel is in theatres this weekend and there’s no possible way that it can be worse the Superman Return. There’s also a new Superman comic series that debuts this week after last week’s new series. This one is Superman Unchained #1 and is the first of my picks of the week.

If you’re looking from something from Marvel, you should check out Wolverine and the X-Men #31. The series is a bit hit and miss but it’s hits are big hits. And now for something a bit different. Dark Horse has a new series based on My Chemical Romance’s latest album, Danger Days: The True Lives of the Fabulous Killjoys, with The True Lives of the Fabulous Killjoys #1. That’s the first time I remember seeing a comic series based on an album.

Children’s Cancer Centre Rebrands Chemo as Justice League Superformula

jla-superformula-bagsThere aren’t many bright spots to going through cancer treatment but the A.C. Camargo Cancer Center in Sao Paulo has teamed up with DC Comics to make things a little easier on kids. The children’s cancer clinic is rebranding chemotherapy drugs as “superformula” and branding the bags with the logos of members of the Justice League.

Comic Book Pull List for June 5, 2013

archer-and-armstrong-10After an absolutely epic week for comics last week (and a painful week for my wallet though my local comic book store disagrees), things quiet down a bit this week. That doesn’t mean that we don’t have some interesting prospects for this Wednesday’s new releases.

First up this week, let’s talk about Green Lantern #21. Geoff Johns time at the helm of the Green Lantern series has come to an end after 10 years writing GL comics. Now, we get to see what Robert Venditti can do with the Lantern Corps. A new Daredevil series kicks off this week with Daredevil: Dark Nights #1 helmed by artist Lee Weeks. And a new story arc kicks off in the Archer & Armstrong series in Archer & Armstrong #10.

Comic Book Pull List for May 29, 2013

x-men-1There are some neat comics coming out this week. I’d hazard that there might be something for everyone this week, whether you’re a fan of sci-fi, superheroes, long-running series or newly-debuting comics.

My three picks of the week are all new releases. The one I’m most interested in the new series focused solely on the women of the X-Men. Your favourite X-Women debut this week in slightly confusingly named X-Men #1. DC Comics and Vertigo are teaming up for a new sci-fi horror mini-series The Wake. Finally, the legendary John Carpenter takes the helm on his first comic series in Asylum #1.

Comic Book Pull List for May 22, 2013

green-team-teen-trillionaires-1Alright, I may have been a bit optimistic by saying things would be better this week than last. My own personal pull list is busier this week but not by much.

My big three picks of the week include a couple of brand new series and one issue that may as well be a new series. From the mind of video game designer American McGee is Akaneiro #1. DC is finally getting in on the whole economic disparity thing after Chris Nolan did in The Dark Knight Rises. A group of the super rich are funding projects that sounds like it’ll eventually run afoul of some superheroes in Green Team Teen Trillionaires #1. And it all begins again in Superior Spider-Man #10. Did you read SSM #9? It wasn’t as good as some earlier issues but I’m counting on it to set the table big time for future issues.
