Four Companies Won’t Be on the Floor at E3 2016

e3-2016-logo-headerIt used to be the most important week in gaming. Now, it looks as though it isn’t just the gamers and the press that think that the annual Electronic Entertainment Expo, better known as E3, has lost some of its luster. Some of the biggest names in the industry don’t see it as the be all and end all of gaming.

Over the last few months, four companies have publicly announced that they won’t have a presence on the floor of E3 this year. In January, EA announced that they wouldn’t be at the Los Angeles Convention Center. Over the last week, Activision, Disney Interactive and Wargaming all announced they wouldn’t be at the LACC either.

Superhot Review: Am I Standing Still

superhot-headerYou’ve probably heard or read the lines but maybe you don’t understand them. “Super. Hot. Super. Hot.” Or maybe you’ve read “It’s the most innovative shooter I’ve played in years.” These aren’t ready-made box quotes from your favourite critics. They’re lines right from Superhot, the new first-person shooter that’s taken gaming by storm for the last week or so.

Superhot is a new first-person shooter that’s been labelled as being somewhere between a strategy game, a puzzle game and a traditional FPS. The hybrid of styles certainly makes this one of the more fun and interesting games that I’ve played in years.

Steam Bundles Prices Can Now Drop for Already Owned Games

Have you ever seen a bundle on Steam and thought “it would be a good deal if I didn’t already own half of the games in it?” That feeling may change very soon as Steam has reworked the bundle system and made dynamic bundle pricing available for bundles. This means that the price of bundles on Steam can drop based on the number of games you already own in it.

eSports Weekend Calendar: March 3 – 6, 2016

Big, big weekend in eSports this week. It’s an IEM weekend which is usually a big deal but this weekend is the annual IEM World Championships from Katowice, Poland. It’s the one eSports event that I would strongly consider hopping on a plane for. Well, mostly because I’ve never been to Eastern Europe and I understand Poland is a lovely part of the world.

Anyway, the annual IEM World Championship features League of Legends and CS:GO events along with supporting mini-tournaments for Hearthstone and HOTS. They’ve also partnered with Blizzard to bring the WCS Winter Championship to Katowice which marks the first major stop on the road to BlizzCon.

If none of that strikes your fancy, the second Dota 2 Major Championship, the Shanghai Major, is currently going through its playoffs with the grand final on Sunday. I would assume that the winner of this tournament will spent July in Seattle for The International so there’s more than the $1.1 million winner’s purse on the line.

Movie Trailers Roundup for March 2, 2016

I guess that Hollywood was too busy politicking for the Oscars to cut trailers for this week’s roundup. There are only five trailers that we have in this week’s roundup. Most of the movies strike me as ones that would go over well at Film Festivals. Makes me think I should go to more film festivals now that I say it.

Firewatch Review: Hey There Delilah

firewatch-headerWalking simulators and I have an adversarial relationship. I wanting to like them because I love a good story in a game but the review scores don’t really back that up. While I loved The Stanley Parable, I thought that Gone Home and Everybody’s Gone to the Rapture were average games at best despite picking up acclaim from other games.

The latest walking simulator that I’ve added to my library is Firewatch. The game got its first big public unveiling as part of a PlayStation E3 keynote presentation and has now made its way to the PC as well. Given that PC is home to the walking simulator, would the latest entry in the genre stack up to the competition.
