Portal Board Game Coming This Fall

portal-board-gameBeing a big Portal fan and a big board game fan, I think this news is the sort of thing that combines the best of both worlds to make the best news ever. A design team at Valve has partnered up with board game company Cryptozoic Entertainment to make Portal: Uncooperative Cake Acquisition Game.

In Portal: Uncooperative Cake Acquisition Game (the name hasn’t been finalized), two to four players play as Aperture Science test candidates. The goal, according to Valve’s Jeep Barnett, is to “test in the most desirable test chambers.” To win, you have to kill off the other player’s test candidates. How very  GLaDOS.

Apparently, we don’t have to worry about this being some quick licensed cash-in board game. Cryptozoic’s President and Chief Creative Officer, Cory Jones, told Polygon that the game’s prototype came to them from Valve’s board game team and they didn’t have to make any major changes to it. So this is going to be a Valve Portal game through and through.

As a Portal fan, my biggest concern is whether the trademark humour of the Portal games makes it to the board game. I doubt it will but I’m sure there are ways to make it happen. Also, I hope the game has makes you think to solve some test chambers. As funny as Portal was, I did enjoy having to think through a game.

Portal: Uncooperative Cake Acquisition Game is scheduled for a Q4 2014 release for about $50. Hopefully review copies exist in the board game world.
