On Saturday, popular crowdfunding website Kickstarter announced that they had been hacked and the hackers has made off with a whole host of user data including email addresses, usernames and encrypted passwords.

In a blog post on the Kickstarter website, the company revealed the hacking. While they noted what was taken, they were quick to point out that no credit card information had been stolen as part of the hacking. They also said that the stolen password data was encrypted but could be cracked if someone had the ability to break the encryption on the passwords with weak passwords being the easiest to figure out.

As such, Kickstarter has asked everyone to change their Kickstarter password and to change their passwords on any other websites that use the same password as your Kickstarter account. The company does say that they’ve closed up the security hole as a result of the hacking so they should be safe, for now.

I seldom understand the motivations of hackers. However, you should never consider any website 100% safe because you never know what hackers are up to. I’m not saying that every website you use should have a different password or that you should change passwords every three months. It’s just something to be aware of online.
