Building (Critical) Consensus: Disney Infinity

disney-infinity-box-artGiven the fact that Skylanders has made Activision over $1 billion in gross revenue since it was first launched, you knew that it was a matter of time before someone else jumped on the bandwagon. In this case, it’s Disney who have opened up their vast vault of characters for their own video game slash action figure collecting game Disney Infinity. Who knew that South Park’s Chinpokomon episode would prove hauntingly accurate of today’s video game industry? But that’s probably just me being cynical.

Beware when buying this game for consoles other than the Xbox 360. Reports say that the PS3 version is plagued with online and offline play issues . The Wii U version doesn’t seem to be compatible with the Classic and Pro controllers. And Wii owners have found out that their system’s version of the game doesn’t have a local co-op adventure mode. There’s a billion dollars waiting for Disney with this launch. No wonder why they seemed to rush it.

Game Informer (90%): The show stealer is a mode called Toy Box. Toy Box is a construction set where worlds can be created, played within, and shared online. If Minecraft is the Lego of video games, Disney Infinity is the Duplo… Disney Infinity is off to a great start and will hopefully be supported for years to come.

Hardcore Gamer (80%): While Disney Infinity might be a precisely coordinated marketing strategy, it’s also an imaginative multimedia experience that will appeal to gamers of all ages. Kids will adore everything about it and adults will enjoy collecting their favorite expertly-crafted figures and seeing them in action. The game is a little rough around the edges, but the substantial Play Sets and massive amount of content makes it easy to understand lapses in visual quality.

Official PlayStation Magazine UK (70%):  Once pester power enters the equation (and you can be sure it will) you’re looking at quite the hefty outlay… Don’t bet against this becoming the latest playground must-have come Christmas. It’s a clever use of Disney licences that kids will absolutely adore, even if grown-ups will be less enamoured by the mission – and merchandise – structure.

GamesRadar (50%): You’re going to love Disney Infinity before you play it… But once you start to play, and once you stumble over the technical issues, and once you find that there are barriers around every turn, you’re bound to find that you’re in love with what you think Disney Infinity could be, and not what it actually is… But as of now Disney Infinity is a flawed experiment, and far from the magical experience you’re looking for.

Digital Spy (40%): Unfortunately, the core mechanics in each of these campaigns are dull and lack any real depth. Add to that… some clumsily-designed campaigns and you have a largely forgettable game that, Toy Box mode aside, doesn’t do the esteemed Disney name justice.
