SyFy Greenlights Sharknado 2
The social media sensation Sharknado is getting a sequel. The made-for-TV movie’s social media buzz, especially on Twitter where it garnered up to 5,000 tweets per minute, overcame the below average ratings and earned the so bad that it’s good flick a sequel.
The sequel, to be called Sharknado 2, will be set in New York rather than Los Angeles. There hasn’t been confirmation of who will star in the movie, including if any of the cast of the original Sharknado will return. However, the movie will be out in 2014.
For the sake of completeness, the reported viewership of Sharknado was 1.3 million viewers where as the average SyFy original movie has about 1.5 million viewers. On the other hand, Sharknado’s 5,000 tweets per minute tops popular network shows like the Big Bang Theory and Big Brother. It was about 2,500 tweets short of The Red Wedding, though.
SyFy is also holding a contest to name the sequel. To enter, you tweet @SyfyMovies with the hashtag #Sharknado to submit a suggestion. Personally, I like Sharknado 2: The Resharkening and Sharknado 2: Reckoning.
