NCAA Ends Football Licensing Agreement with EA Sports

ea-sports-ncaa-football-14The long-running NCAA Football franchise is coming to an end after this year’s NCAA Football 14 by EA Sports. The NCAA announced that they would allow their licensing agreement with EA Sports to expire at the end of June 2014.

However, given the structure of licensing of college schools and events, it’s entirely possible that EA Sports will have a college football next year.

The NCAA issued a press release yesterday saying that they were ending the relationship as a result of the ongoing litigation between EA and former football players whose likenesses were used in EA Sports’ NCAA games without licensing them. It seems as though the NCAA is trying to distance themselves from future legal issues over the use of likenesses and have it all fall on EA.

Unlike what ESPN’s SportsCenter’s Twitter feed tells you, this doesn’t mean that this is the last time that EA Sports will make a college football video game. Even the NCAA admits that the names and logos of the school are licensed independently of the NCAA. So next year’s game may not have the NCAA logo in it but it may still have all the teams, fight songs, stadia and bowl games.

The NCAA’s statement only covers the licensing of its name and logo. The majority of school names and associated trademarks, fight songs and bowl games are all licensed separately by a company called the Collegiate Licensing Company. Some other trademarks are handled by other smaller licensing companies.

In other words, there’s nothing stopping EA from creating a 99% authentic college football game next year. Rather than EA Sports NCAA Football 15, it’ll likely be called EA Sports College Football 15. Maybe they’ll stick a name in front of it like they do with Madden. There’s no reason why you won’t see a very similar game next year with all NCAA logos and mentions deleted from NCAA Football 14’s code.
