Wargaming Buys Gas Powered Games

We’ve been closely tracking the saga of Gas Powered Games as it tried to use Kickstarter to keep the company alive. GPG boss Chris Taylor said he had been looking at alternative means to keep the company alive after cancelling their Wildman Kickstarter. Well, it looks like their hopes have been answered as developer Wargaming has purchased GPG.

For Wargaming, the purchase of GPG is part of a recent expansion of studios under their umbrella. Over the last six months, Wargaming has purchased MMO development tool company BigWorld, shooter developer Day 1 Studios (perhaps best known for the FEAR series) and now RPG and RTS developer Gas Powered Games.

On Monday, GPG boss Chris Taylor hinted that something like this may have been in the works. In the update announcing the cancellation of the Wildman Kickstarter, Taylor said that he was focusing his attention on other ways to keep the company alive. Clearly, selling to another developer was the way GPG chose to go.

Wargaming hasn’t come out with their plans for Gas Powered Games yet. However, one would assume that the continuing development of Wildman would be something that Wargaming is interested in. It wouldn’t make much sense to buy a cash-strapped developer only to tell them to scrap the IP that Chris Taylor thought was good enough to bet the company on.
