Season Four of Community Will Start with THE HUNGER DEANS!
I’m a huge fan of NBC’s cult hit sitcom Community. Like many of my fellow Human Beings (that’s the name of the show’s fans), I’m a little worried about the direction of the show after NBC turfed showrunner Dan Harmon which led to a mass exodus of the show’s writing staff and producers.
NBC is trying to calm everyone down with their sneak peek of the Season Four premiere episode, airing February 7th, which we have below.
I don’t want to read too much into 60 seconds of an episode but I’m a little worried. The blow off course is typical Community. This is a show that had blow off courses about seizing the day. A History of Ice Cream course seems natural.
The Hunger Games parody is what worries me. I’ve never seen Community as a show that tries to be topical with its meta-humour and pop culture references/jokes. While I don’t know much about The Hunger Games, I hope there will be more to this episode than Hunger Games references. If there is more than that, we might be okay.
I’m just concerned that new showrunners David Guarascio and Moses Port didn’t parody The Hunger Games because it’s topical and draw eyeballs. Community was a show that set out to be funny. While I’m sure Dan Harmon wanted the show to be watched, I don’t think the sole intention was to make a lowest common denominator sitcom to get people to watch and make everyone involved money (eg. Two and a Half Men).
Community is a show about nostalgia and (meta) humour. While Guarascio and Port can make this a funny show, that doesn’t mean that it will be the same.
