Comic Book Pull List for July 16, 2014

infinite-crisis-1DC Comics found the comic book adaptation of the video game Injustice to be such a success that they’re doing it again. Their MOBA (I’m talking about those a lot this week) Infinite Crisis is getting a comic adaptation with Infinite Crisis: Fight for the Multiverse. If video games aren’t your speed, DC also reboots Teen Titans this week and sends Harley Quinn to SDCC.

Elsewhere, Dark Horse wraps up their miniseries of The Witcher in The Witcher #5. If only the game wasn’t delayed, this would have been pretty well-timed. A special one-shot by Dynamite reveal some of the origins of Lamont Cranston in The Shadow #0. And Marvel continues their hypothetical look at the future with 100th Anniversary Special: X-Men #1.

And Archie dies this week. Or maybe I should say that one Archie dies seeing as he’s being published in multiple timelines simultaneously from how that AP article put it. If you want to see an Archie die, pick up Life With Archie #36.

Comic Book Pull List for July 9, 2014

star-trek-35I’m a little behind on my Spider-Man comics so these previews of this week’s new Spider-Man issues might be completely out of date. Much like the Fantastic Four last week, Spider-Man gets his own speculative future issue. This week, the Spider-Man of 2061 stars in 100th Anniversary Special: Spider-Man #1. And straight from the pages of Superior Spider-Man, it’s the return of the Spider-Man of 2099 in Spider-Man 2099 #1.

Elsewhere, Dick Grayson gets a new adventure and his own comic following his adventures in Forever Evil in Grayson #1. And the rebooted Star Trek dips into another classic Star Trek storyline. Q is back! Who knows what he’ll be up to now that he has a whole new timeline to meddle with over the course of six issues starting in Star Trek #35.

Comic Book Pull List for July 2, 2014

100th-anniversary-fantastic-four-1After taking Canada Day off because I’m Canadian and it’s a statutory holiday, it’s time to give you this week’s comic book releases just in time for your local comic book shop to open today.

This week seems to be tie-in week at the major publishers. With the new movie coming out soon, Marvel is pushing Guardians of the Galaxy hard. This week sees the launch of two new series, Guardians of the Galaxy: Most Wanted and Rocket Raccoon. We recently previewed a tie-in with the Robocop reboot but the original Robocop continues in Boom’s Robocop #1. And IDW’s Dexter’s Lab miniseries comes to an end in Dexter’s Laboratory #4.

If tie-ins aren’t your thing, the crossover event of the century continues in Batman ’66 Meets The Green Hornet #2. And Marvel is doing some odd 100th anniversary thing with the Fantastic Four. Marvel has only been around 75 years and Fantastic Four 53 but that doesn’t mean that Marvel can’t fast-forward to 2061 to look at the future of the Fantastic Four in the 100th Anniversary Special – Fantastic Four #1.

Comic Book Pull List for June 25, 2014

wolverine-9I figure I should probably start this week’s pull list with the cash grabbiest of titles. Okay, some of you are probably interested but the hype Marvel is trying to push on this and the fact that comic book characters never stay dead (Hi, Peter Parker) make me very cynical about it. Anyway, this week’s Wolverine #9 starts the Death of Wolverine storyline so Wolverine fans might be just a little interested in it.

The other big comic industry story of the week is the debut of John Romita Jr. over at DC Comics as the new artist on the Superman series. DC Creative boss Geoff Johns also joins the series giving Romita the A-list treatment that Johns previously gave Ivan Reis and Joe Prado at the launch of The New 52. Romita’s debut comes in Superman #32.

Comic Book Pull List for June 18, 2014

star-trek-the-city-on-the-edge-of-forever-1There doesn’t seem to be a very long pull list this week. I guess we’re still waiting for the big explosion of big summer storylines to begin at the big two publishers. I’d imagine that we’re just weeks away from that happening. For now, it’s a quiet week.

I do have a couple of recommendations this week. Marvel has the final issue of George Romero’s Empire of the Dead: Act One in issue #5. And over at IDW, they pull a page from Dark Horse’s playbook and bring an original script to print as a comic. While Dark Horse had the original Star Wars script to print, IDW is taking the original screenplay for the legendary Star Trek episode The City on the Edge of Forever in an IDW miniseries of the same name.

Comic Book Pull List for June 11, 2014

eve-true-storiesLet’s take a break from our E3 coverage to talk about more video games! Well, kind of about more video games. Since this week is E3, I thought that it was only appropriate to feature game-based comic books in this week’s pull list. Younger gamers will appreciate IDW’s new series that starts with Angry Birds Comics #1. Older fans can jump into an ongoing series in Sonic the Hedgehog #261. And MMO fans can check out a hardcover collection of stories about the fall of the Band of Brothers alliance in EVE: True Stories.

I also have a few new comics for regular pull list readers. The gang at Marvel have a spin-off of Original Sin with Original Sins #1. No points for the title. Justice League United #2 gets featured here just because it has a Justice League Canada variant cover which will always earn points with me. And the Rocky and Bullwinkle miniseries ends in Rocky and Bullwinkle #4.

Comic Book Pull List for June 4, 2014

batman-66-meets-the-green-hornet-1This week, there’s only one comic that matters for me this week. Kevin Smith’s The Green Hornet series crosses over with DC Comics’ Batman ’66 series in a moment that should bring back memories of the original TV series. Back in 1967, The Green Hornet and Kato joined forces with Batman and Robin in one of the original TV crossovers. This week, it happens again as the four crimefighters reunite in Batman ’66 Meets The Green Hornet #1.

Elsewhere, Boom adapts the cult hit Big Trouble in Little China for print complete with input from director John Carpenter for Big Trouble in Little China #1. And Judge Dredd completes his five-issue west coast adventure in Judge Dredd: Mega City Two #5.

Comic Book Pull List for May 28, 2014

the-star-wars-8Well, I don’t know about you but I’m excited for tomorrow. No, it’s not because it’s my birthday. It’s really not. I’m still in my mid-20s and my hair is starting to go grey. Just little bits on the sides for now but if I keep working myself so hard IRL, it’ll be completely grey. Beats going bald by 30 like my old man, though.

For me this week, it’s only appropriate that The Star Wars, the comic series based on George Lucas’ original draft of the iconic film and franchise, comes to an end this week. I’ve been loving this alternate take on the series since it started though that doesn’t mean that I’m not happy with how the original trilogy turned out in the end. Now, if we could all forget about those damned prequels… Except for III. That one was good.

Comic Book Pull List for May 21, 2014

forever-evil-7This week, the DC Comics universe begins again. After many weeks of delays, the Forever Evil saga comes to an end. Old storylines end (or maybe they die) and new ones rise in their wake. So if you’re a DC fan, you have three comics to choose from. The big DC-verse-wide event comes to and end as Lex Luthor’s Injustice League does battle with Earth-3’s Crime Syndicate in Forever Evil #7. The fallout from that continues in a new storyline in Justice League #30. And the JLA series comes to an end in Justice League of America #14 but who will survive.

Elsewhere in the comic book world, Marvel’s 2014 universe event continues in Original Sin #2. Just because they’re losing the Star Wars license doesn’t mean that Dark Horse isn’t pushing out new Star Wars series. New this week is Star Wars: Darth Maul – Son of Dathomir #1. And Dynamite has a new series featuring pulp hero The Shadow in the Cold War called The Shadow: Midnight in Moscow #1.

Comic Book Pull List for May 14, 2014

justice-league-united-1Normally, I don’t struggle finding recommendations for the pull list but it seems as though options are a little slim this week. That might be because everyone is releasing everything next week, including Forever Evil wrapping up.

I do have a few recommendations for this week in the meantime. Before Forever Evil ends, DC is already launching the next Justice League series to replace JLA. It’s the Justice League United #1 which opens up proceeding in Canada which automatically means that it’s awesome. Failing that, you can always try the Superman vs. Doomsday one-shot Superman: Doomed #1. And over at Marvel, they get into the world of organized crime in United States of Murder Inc. #1.
