WinAmp to Shut Down in December

winamp-logoHaving been in high school in the early 2000s, I definitely knew about the iconic WinAmp media player. People had installed that on just about every computer in the school. Along the way, it was slowly replaced by other media players and this thing called “the internet.”

Now, we’re in the final days of WinAmp as the company quietly posted on its website that WinAmp’s web services and website would be shut down on December 20th.

Nullsoft’s WinAmp was the dominant media player of the early part of the 2000s. It’s customizable design, audio visualization, playlist and media library functionalities made it a hit when it was launched. However, other new services came out that replaced WinAmp. The likes of iTunes became a dominant media player thanks to the integration with the wildly popular iPod. Streaming services like Spotify started replacing the need to have a media library on your computer.

You know, I was never a really big WinAmp fan but it is a bit sad to see this iconic piece of software from the early days of the internet and when the number of computers in homes was really starting to grow. Maybe I’m just being nostalgic about this but one of these days, we’re going to miss the old classics like WinAmp.

  1. I love my winamp and I hate iTunes!
Whole “cloud” thing is an issue for media management software devs.
I’m gonna go DL the latest winamp version before December ends.
    Thanks for the post!

  2. When I was younger, I would listen to Radio Rivendell through Winamp. The connections were shitty, sometimes, but I still look back fondly to the nights I would come home, turn on Winamp and hear “Welcome to Rivendell.” Such a small memory, but still gives me a smile.

  3. I remember spending hours customizing my winamp. Between the skins and visualizations. Geez, you’re right, I just got nostalgic for a piece of software too! Thanks for that 🙂
