Karl Urban Says We Might Get a Dredd Sequel

dredd-movie-bannerLong time readers of the blog know that I’m a big Judge Dredd fan. That fandom extends to last year’s Dredd movie which was absolutely fantastic and I think it was every bit as good as The Dark Knight Rises.

Now, Judge Dredd himself, Karl Urban, while talking about his latest go as Dr. Leonard McCoy suggested that a vocal fan base could convince the studio to make a Dredd sequel. Is this the point when I go “LOUD NOISES!?”

In an interview with Collider, Dredd Urban said:

Interestingly enough, I did have breakfast with Alex Garland this morning.  It’s not off the agenda.  Clearly everyone has woken up to the fact that an audience has found this movie and loves it.  It’s entirely possible, and if people want to see another installment then they should be vocal about that, because, it can happen.  The power of fandom can resurrect projects.  In fact, that’s what happened with Star Trek.  They weren’t going to do a third season until fans did a letter writing campaign and they continued that series.

It’s worth noting that Dredd has achieved a sort of cult status. It grossed $36.5 million at the box office but had a budget of $45 million. Granted, Dredd has probably made up the difference through DVD sales and increased interest in the comic franchise.

This isn’t the first time we’ve heard about a follow-up to the Dredd movie. In April, 2000AD teased that a comic book sequel to Dredd 3D is in the works.

While I love Dredd, I don’t like Total Film‘s suggestion that the folks behind the film will try to fund it through a Kickstarter because I wouldn’t put it past anyone. I’m funding this movie by buying the comics and I will fund it by watching it in theatre and picking up the DVD/Blu-ray. Putting money in some suit’s pocket to alleviate him of risk is not my idea of properly supporting a movie.
