EA Cuts 900 Staff in Latest Round of Lay-Offs

ea-stock-logoIf I didn’t know better, I’d swear that not a week went by when we didn’t get rumours or reports of layoffs in the gaming industry. Just the same, I’d swear that not a week goes by when we don’t hear about internal turmoil at Electronic Arts.

Temporarily missed among all the news about sales targets for the likes of Crysis 3 and Dead Space 3 was news that EA was laying-off 10% of their workforce, which translates to 900 people, as part of their ongoing corporate restructuring program.

Over the last few weeks, we’ve heard rumours that EA would be closing the EA Partners publishing program, Visceral Montreal, Popcap Vancouver and Quicklime Games. According to reports from those studios and EA internal memos, PopCap Vancouver and Quicklime have both been shuttered. Back in February, it was reported (controversially, mind you) that Visceral Montreal was closed and all staff was let go. There hasn’t been any official confirmation as to the fate of EA Partners.

Also believed to be included in the 900 employees laid-off are members of EA’s Montreal and Mobile Montreal studios and EA Los Angeles. EA hasn’t confirmed where the lay-offs occurred but these studios were the most often targets of rumours about lay-offs.

EA’s annual financial statements haven’t been posted to their website yet but a quick look through various reports indicates that EA was profitable for the 2013 fiscal year. They’re just not as profitable as they’d like to be.

While it might seem a bit cut-throat for EA to cut staff despite making a profit, the stock market responded positively. Overnight trading after EA’s earnings call saw EA stock price rise $2.17. Their share price even hit a 52-week high on the Thursday after their earnings call. Even if the average gamer doesn’t like EA’s business practices, it sure seems like investors do.
