It’s Not Looking Good For Gas Powered Games and Wildman

With one week to go in the Kickstarter fundraising campaign for its in-progress Wildman, it’s not looking good for Gas Powered Games and boss Chris Taylor. The Kickstarter has a fundraising goal of $1.1 million, an astronomical number for a Kickstarter campaign goal, and it looks like they will fall well short of the mark.

With only around $450,000 pledged against the $1.1 million target (amounting to 41% funded) as of last night, it looks as though the Kickstarter will fail and GPG will receive none of the money pledged as a result of Kickstarter’s all-or-nothing fundraising policy. With out that funding to complete the game, it appears as though Gas Powered Games will be forced to close its doors.

Gas Powered Games, best known as the developer behind the critically well-received Supreme Commander and Dungeon Seige games, says that they are very short on cash. Boss Chris Taylor has said that this Kickstarter is effectively an all-in gamble with the future of the company hanging on the success of this campaign. If it fails, the company is likely to be shuttered. Shortly after the Kickstarter was launched, GPG laid off 40 of its staff.

The two biggest things going against GPG right now is that high target and the apparent insolvency of the company. As Kickstarter won’t pay out the pledges to GPG unless the target is met, there isn’t much incentive to pledge unless you think that there is a chance that the campaign will succeed. Similarly, given the company’s documented financial troubles, one would be right to ask if GPG will have enough money to complete the project without their coffers running dry.

Despite the risks, I did pledge to the campaign and plan to giveaway one of my extra copies in some sort of contest/giveaway type thing. That’s assuming that this gets to market. And it looks like Gas Powered Games is going to need a lot more money to make that happen.

If you feel so inclined, here’s a link to Wildman’s Kickstarter.
